The Zodiac division of the ecliptic into twelve parts, each assigned a Zodiac sign, is probably of Babylonian Mesopotamia origin.

They were very early with astrology, mapping the sky and noting planetary movements thousands of years ago. The Zodiac, very much like the one we know today, might have emerged in Mesopotamia around BC.

But Babylonian astrology is probably far older than that. Already the Babylonians connected the Zodiac sign to the scorpion. That might have to do with the constellation with the same name, vaguely suggesting the shape of a scorpion if some of the stars are connected. See the image below of the constellation Scorpius. The tail goes diagonally down to the left corner, where a few stars mark the stinger, much like an arrow head. Below is an antique illustration of the same constellation, where the figure of the scorpion has been added.

The M of the symbol is not that easy to explain. It might be a Medieval symbol of medicine or alchemy. The M reappears in the symbol for Virgo, another Zodiac sign — see the image to the right.

Virgo symbol. Since M is a Greek and Roman letter, this symbol for Scorpio is hardly older than those cultures. I would bet on Medieval times, when alchemy and other metaphysical speculations erupted all over Europe. The mystery would be solved if the Greek or Roman spelling of scorpion contained an M — but no. Not even the Babylonian name for it holds anything near the sound of M.

This sign has no problem with cutting off people from their lives, regardless of how close of a relationship they had prior to the spat. This extreme streak in Scorpio can be seen in almost every aspect of their life. If they go through a breakup, it seems like their breakup was the worst in all of history. Their life stories turn into tall tales at some point. They see things as either black or white; nothing falls in the gray.

If they like you, they like you a lot. Obviously, not everything in life can be put into neat boxes and easily labeled. Sometimes, you have to make an exception for things to work smoothly. Hopefully, you end up becoming a friend to a Scorpio and not a foe. This sign is quick to get angry, slow to forgive, and especially slow if not incapable at forgetting. For this reason, aside from Capricorn, Scorpio is the sign most likely to keep a grudge in their heart.

This trait of Scorpio is what makes them a tricky partner. On top of that, if you try to do the same and bring up something that they did themselves, things get even worse for you. Probably unsurprisingly, Scorpios are the ones who usually take the obsessive stance in a relationship.

This is due to their extreme nature, as well as their dramatic tendencies. Scorpios take their obsessive nature to a new level compared to the other Zodiac signs, putting them at the top of the list for obsessive signs.

If only that were the case with Scorpio. This sign knows no boundaries when it comes to partners, and they insist on knowing everything about you from the start. Along with being dramatic, extreme, and obsessive, Scorpios are also controlling. What a lineup of traits!

Of course, you want to be open with your partner and share everything with them. But creating boundaries is necessary in any relation, especially romantic ones where so much is already exposed. If you plan on going somewhere, you need to tell them beforehand. Some extreme Scorpios may even try to change their partners to fit their likes more. Although this may not always be the case, Scorpios are intense towards their partners in all aspects. They feel better about the situation when they have control over the reins, and unfortunately, this crosses over to their love life too.

They just show it in a more obsessive and directing way.
