It was that association with psychedelia that very likely got the show from children to stoners, and from stoners to the broader audience of teens and young adults it now enjoys.

It has been a beautifully managed balancing act, but, as the show begins its seventh year and penultimate season, the scales are beginning to tip. And for the better. As the show nears its end, and as its protagonist, Finn, comes of age, it seems committed to bringing its plot promises to fruition, at the expense of some of its freeform, child-like silliness. Islands does a dizzying amount of plot development in something minutes. The action starts with a mysterious aircraft landing on the beach in search of Finn.

Each island offers a different variation of a dystopian human future. There is the gentle, lone survivor living in a hollow tree.

All of this involves quite a bit of world-building and some closure for Finn, while reaffirming his place back in Ooo, where he is at home and needed to help its citizens. The show even has enough formal flexibility to invite guest animators for occasional experiments in different styles. Adventure Time is certainly surreal, but it adheres to a deeper, more earnest kind of surrealism that is distinct from some inchoate sense of oddity.

This also lets them exercise their creative muscles in new and weird ways. This may also be where dice come into play, as a critical success or failure might result in something absolutely absurd happening.

It's important to pay attention to what these locations look and feel like, as well as what makes them fundamentally absurd. If creating an Adventure Time -esque location, DMs need to make sure they're creating memorable places with that fit like this into the Land of Ooo.

What makes Adventure Time 's locations so recognizable and interesting is that they embrace the weird and odd. While Adventure Time is funny, there's a ton of unexpected drama in the show, and surprising a party with that is important.

For example, in "Holly Jolly Secrets," Adventure Time reveals the Ice King's tragic, secret past, revealing how he became less and less human. The once silly cartoon villain was actually a man steeped in tragedy and loneliness, but unable to express it in his current state. A lot of character's have backstories like this, and it's important to flesh them out and make them three-dimensional. With the so called "dum dum juice" he has been transformed to a simple minded, but happy candy person.

Later in the episode, he is seen wearing a nightcap while in bed and sleeping alone with no roommate. When Princess Bubblegum wakes him up using the security system's intercom, he sleepily says, "Glob?
