This system is a modification to the original point system for supercross events used for two decades. The main difference is an increase between one and two points for most positions on the end score. This change's goal was to create a more linear spread of the point totals, which means that the best racer with the fastest time will still earn the most points.

Yet, inconsistent performances will be slightly less punishing than they were under the previous scoring system. This new system also means that winning will be slightly more challenging than it was before. With a narrower spread between results, it creates more opportunities for racers to come from behind if they are able to secure higher placed finishes. In order to understand the format of supercross, it's essential to learn about the different classes that compete.

Two primary divisions race in supercross events, the SX and the SX, which differ in a couple of ways. The absolute top riders race in the SX class, where they ride cc four-stroke motorcycles. The SX class is geared towards younger and newer riders who race on cc four-stroke motorcycles and are further separated into east and west regions, which have their own qualifying rounds. Each of these regions will crown its own champion, and they only meet to compete against each other in the final race of the season, which has taken place in Salt Lake City, Utah the past two seasons.

The numbers and in the class divisions refer to the actual engine sizes of the bikes involved, which uses cubic centimeters of displacement for measurement. This boils down to class motorcycles having more power and torque than their smaller cousins, but they are also heavier and more difficult to control. What may surprise some people is that the lap times between the two different classes are actually reasonably similar.

However, in a race between bikes of each class, the s will outpace the s out of the gate and when accelerating out of turns. We have established at this point that racers earn points based on their placements in the qualifying rounds, but to grasp how the point system in supercross works, we have to take a closer look at the way qualifications function.

To begin with, there are always more riders than there are available spots to race in the finals. Everything beyond that gets a two-point bump. This means that on those disastrous nights in the season, when Tomac finished eighth twice and 15th, he would have received two more points each of those races. Some riders are going to get a little gift given to them.

The best guy is always going to win but it will be a little harder for them to do that. The major format change is being called a triple crown and will only be implemented at three of the 17 rounds: Anaheim II, Atlanta and Minneapolis. At those events, riders in each racing division SX and SX will compete in three separate main events of varying times. For the class, the three main events will be eight, 12 and 15 minutes plus one lap in length.

Eighteen of the 22 riders will be chosen during timed qualifying earlier in the day. A last chance qualifier will be run to determine the final four riders on the gate. Currently, that only happens once: 20 minutes plus one lap. With three feature races, fans will see Ken Roczen and Tomac and others do battle for a total of 38 to 40 minutes. And with the varying lengths in race time, will new faces rise to the top? At the triple crown events, an Olympic-style scoring system will be used to determine a single overall winner of the round.

The winner of each main event gets one point, second gets two points, etc. The rider with the fewest total points is awarded the 26 championship points for that round. I get that. It was tried in the s and went away. Now, basketball without a three-point line is unimaginable. Like that three-point line, three supercross mains of different time lengths could completely change the strategy for Supercross racers.

Just in case flying through the air past flamethrowers is not enough to hold fans' attention, some changes are being made to the Monster Energy Supercross format for Part of that involves making sure the top riders are on the track in front of fans for longer.
